ISO 7637-2 Bench Testing

ISO 7637-2 specifies bench test methods to verify the compliance of equipment installed on road vehicles with conducted electrical transients along supply lines—covering passenger cars and light commercial vehicles equipped with a 12 V electrical system, as well as commercial vehicles equipped with a 24 V electrical system. The standard also provides measurement methods for transient events and a fault mode severity classification for assessing immunity to such events. It applies to these road vehicles regardless of the propulsion system.

Purpose Objective

  • To verify compliance with conducted electrical transients on vehicle supply lines.
  • To enable measurement of transient events and evaluation of immunity to transient disturbances.

Test Scope Coverage

  • Equipment installed on passenger cars and light commercial vehicles with a 12 V electrical system.
  • Equipment installed on commercial vehicles with a 24 V electrical system.
  • Applicability to these road vehicles regardless of propulsion system.

Technical Implementation Process

  • Methods are defined for measuring transient emissions on supply lines and for testing immunity of devices to these transients.
  • Bench tests are performed under laboratory conditions; certain methods may require the use of an artificial network.
  • For immunity assessment against supply-line transient currents, a bench test method using a test pulse generator may be applied.

Application Areas Use

  • Evaluation of equipment used on 12 V and 24 V electrical systems in road vehicles.
  • Obtaining comparable results through laboratory bench testing.

ISO 7637-2 defines laboratory bench test methods for measuring transient emissions on supply lines and assessing the immunity of devices to transient events. Methods performed with a test pulse generator may not represent every type of transient that can occur in an actual vehicle environment.
